<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - The Fractured Atlas of Jelara #19 Twilight Ungulate - This piece was inspired by my favorite animated film, The Nightmare Before Christmas, though I was unable to complete it on time. The scene depicts Princess Jelara after she falls into a parallel universe and awakens in a mystic forest. Although fireflies shimmer all around her, she is drawn to a small pile of fire for warmth as she waits for dawn. Suddenly, a massive skeleton of an ancient moose rises from the ashes. Fire glows within its mouth, illuminating its blue skull against the night. At this moment, Jelara must decide whether to follow this deity. My teacher praised the work for its handling of contrasts—light and shadow, the girl and the creature, and the fire against the background. However, the portrait still lacks sufficient facial appeal. Given my more traditional approach to painting, my teacher advised me to study J. C. Leyendecker, particularly his methods of interpreting and constructing portraits.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - The Fractured Atlas of Jelara #13 Dynastic Vantage - This illustration was completed just in time for the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is reflected in the celebratory ribbons drifting through the air and the lanterns rising in the background. The composition was originally shorter, but my teacher recommended extending the lower portion to better establish that the princess is seated on a rooftop. As a result, I invested additional time in developing the architectural details, though I simplified many elements to maintain clarity. Narratively, this scene follows Scene #12: after being lifted by the holographic giant, the princess is placed on the rooftop, uncertain of where to go next. A cat emerging from the shadows becomes the key guide for her journey. Because the illustration contains multiple light sources, there may be minor inconsistencies in the light and shadow on the princess. Nonetheless, I made every effort to balance these elements while preserving the intended atmosphere.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - The Fractured Atlas of Jelara #24 Royal Trinity - Since the story follows Princess Jelara as she traverses parallel worlds, encountering her counterparts and nearly causing the collapse of the multiverse, I sought to depict three versions of the princess within a single illustration. At the same time, my art teacher had introduced the technique of rendering glowing white, and I was eager to experiment with it. For the setting, I chose an abandoned ballroom with a fallen chandelier as the backdrop. The three princesses are arranged at varying distances from the viewer, creating a sense of depth and perspective. While the lighting is effectively portrayed, my teacher reminded me that in compositions with multiple characters, their relative positioning is not the only consideration—adherence to the rule of thirds is also essential for emphasizing the focal point. Accordingly, the princess in red—the traversing princess—is positioned to the far left to highlight her role as the central figure.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - The Fractured Atlas of Jelara #27 Ethereal Helix - This illustration serves as a visual echo to #11 Vermillion Descent, in which Princess Jelara is seen descending the steps of an Asian temple. In contrast, this scene depicts her ascending a metallic staircase with a delicate helical structure, casting a starkly different mood. Jelara glances back with unease, as if pursued—yet what awaits her above is entirely unforeseen. Cascading from above are immense, gliding wings—whether angelic or demonic remains uncertain. Are they here to deliver judgment for what she has done to the universe? A translucent veil of dripping water catches the ambient light, adding layered reflections that enhance the ethereal quality of the space. The staircase was painted with four distinct layers to establish depth and perspective; however, the repetitive architectural forms near the top contribute little narrative value and may not be necessary.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - The Fractured Atlas of Jelara #17 Abyssal Resonance - The Runaway Princess illustration series follows the journey of Princess Jelara, heir to the throne of Vaelyra — an ancient regime that governs the central nexus of the multiverse. The Vaelyran royal bloodline possesses a sacred power: the ability to traverse parallel universes at will. Among them, Jelara is uniquely gifted, born with the rare "Azure Gravitation" — a bond to the universe’s primordial spirit formed at the dawn of existence. This rare connection makes her a figure of exceptional importance within the royal hierarchy. Yet Jelara resists her preordained destiny, refusing to ascend the throne and abandon her freedom, she clings to her identity as a princess in freedom, not a queen in prison. Her rebellion sends ripples across the multiverse, and the alternate versions of Jelara begin to waver in their own convictions, and thus, the delicate boundaries between worlds begin to fracture. The multiverse, once held in balance by the royal bloodline’s order, now teeters on collapse — and all that was structured risks descending into degeneracy once more.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - The Fractured Atlas of Jelara #8 Aurora Crescendo - Since my artworks are hand-drawn, making changes after finishing is difficult. So before I begin, I ask ChatGPT for advice. Strangely enough, this illustration kept being chosen as its favorite, no matter how many doubts I had—so I decided to draw it and see if it was right. Originally, the princess’s legs were designed to be parallel, but the AI suggested crossing them for better balance. In Crimson Rising, it also helped align the ropes to make the figure’s center of gravity more realistic. I have to admit, it’s impressive how helpful AI can be for amateur artists. Its second favorite among my works is Solemn Exodus, and I actually agree with that choice. The AI told me it doesn’t feel, but it understands the criteria many art critics use. Still, when I asked it to generate images based on random titles in my style, none of them felt right—neither the composition nor the lighting. So I’m left wondering… does AI really have good taste?</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - The Fractured Atlas of Jelara #21 Waddling Wasteland - I recently bought two illustration books by Simon Stålenhag, and they’ve been incredibly inspiring. But neither I nor my princess share that kind of melancholic tone—even in a rusty wasteland. The rubber ducks were intentionally rendered in bold colors to inject a sense of playfulness into an otherwise obsolete and broken world. I added detail to the background robots but softened their contrast to avoid distraction. Each of their hollow sockets was sealed with button-like covers that double as flashlight windows—pursuing the princess just as she’s about to escape. My favorite part is the reflection effect on the old-fashioned sidecar; it gives the composition a touch of realism. This is the second time I’ve drawn this particular outfit—I love the contrast between the structured leather corselet and the flowing chiffon skirt. But stepping back to the core idea: does a wasteland have to be foggy and desaturated? Must bleakness always be muted?</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - The Fractured Atlas of Jelara #4 Crimson Rising - I completed the transitional scene between Stampede Passage and Scorching Mirage using a relatively simple composition. However, aligning the perspective to cohesively integrate the princess as the focal point, the ascending hot air balloon above, and the expansive canyon in the background required considerable time and adjustment. Although the scale between the princess and the massive transport device remains somewhat exaggerated, I ultimately accepted the design for its narrative clarity. The distant canyon is rendered in luminous tones to enrich the atmosphere under direct sunlight, while the foreground mountains are intentionally darkened to emphasize the princess’s silhouette. To reinforce the urgency of her escape, small human figures—pursuing soldiers—are positioned along the canyon ridge in the midground.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - The Fractured Atlas of Jelara #12 Tunneling Palm - I still chose to maintain an Asian–inspired setting. A sculpture was reimagined in luminous blue hues to represent a holographic goddess. She is depicted as semi-transparent, glowing from within, with portions of the stone archway faintly visible through her form — a visual cue that she is tunneling in from another realm. This element proved the most challenging to render by hand, especially in balancing her ethereal presence with structural detail. The goddess extends a colossal hand to lift the princess from below, evoking imagery from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, to add dramatic tension and cultural texture to the scene. When working on such a complex composition, I naturally focused on the two central figures and grew impatient with the background elements like plants and brickwork. As a result, the initial version lacked cohesion. I later corrected these areas, but it reminded me that I still need more practice with environmental details to achieve greater overall refinement.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - The Fractured Atlas of Jelara #3 Stampede Passage - To continue practicing dynamic scene painting in the Runaway Princess series, I designed a composition in which the princess rides a bison, fleeing from a distant volcanic eruption. The bison was adapted from a previous artwork, with the two background bison repositioned to run in the same direction, enhancing the depth and perspective of the scene. Dust clouds were added around the hooves to emphasize the forceful stomping motion of the central bison. To harmonize the color palette, I incorporated subtle purple tones into the bison’s fur, bridging the contrast between the princess’s red dress and the blue horns and smoke. The princess’s headpiece was simplified to evoke the aesthetics of Native American design. However, the shapes of the clouds and smoke could have been rendered with blurred edges since excessive detail in that area would distract from the focal figure.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - The Fractured Atlas of Jelara #11 Vermillion Descent - I began designing this piece three months ago and recently found time to paint it. Since the blue sign serves as a unifying element throughout the series, I incorporated a blue lantern in the foreground of this scene. This illustration directly follows the previous one, where the princess was seen drifting toward a Torii gate. Now, she is depicted escaping from it. The vertical lantern pillar and horizontal stone stairs frame her tense posture, while the perspective background leads the eye to a samurai standing in the shadows of the temple entrance, contrasting sharply with her golden hair as she runs ahead. The samurai’s ambiguous role—whether protector or pursuer—adds intrigue, enhancing the narrative depth of the scene.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - The Fractured Atlas of Jelara #9 Zen Voyage - During the Spring Festival, I tried to use markers to evoke the atmosphere of a traditional Chinese landscape painting. A gradation of greyscale, transitioning from the pale green river to the deepening hues of the distant mountains, established a profound sense of depth in the background. A dense mist, tinged with shades of lilac and azure to harmonize with the sky, envelops the horizon, subtly obscuring the Torii gate toward which the wooden boat is drifting, thereby infusing the ethereal beauty of the fairy ambiance. The princess, poised in quiet contemplation, glances back at a delicate blue dragonfly perched upon a lotus bud. To enhance the contrast and draw focus to her presence, the surrounding bushes are rendered with detail, while the lotuses in the front, are deliberately simplified, guiding the attention toward the "little blue sign" that beckons the princess to her next destination.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - The Fractured Atlas of Jelara #6 Solemn Exodus - This piece represents a significant culmination of the artistic knowledge I’ve acquired over the past two years, skillfully integrating principles of frame composition, perspective, and color contrast. Guided by my art instructor’s suggestions, I incorporated floating petals and swirling sand into the composition to enhance the ethereal, dreamlike quality of the scene. The use of vividly saturated contrasting hues hints that the portal ahead leads to an entirely different universe, evoking intrigue and anticipation. I observed that depictions of motion in characters are uncommon, yet I find dynamic scenes particularly captivating and intend to further explore this aspect in my future work. The interaction between the blue bird and the princess serves as the focal point of the piece, naturally directing the viewer’s gaze. Additionally, my instructor emphasized the importance of maintaining a unifying element across different scenes. I chose the color blue as a thematic thread, deliberately incorporating a blue element in each of the preceding compositions.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - The Fractured Atlas of Jelara #5 Scorching Mirage - A friend recently pointed out that I rely too heavily on long takes in my compositions and encouraged me to experiment with scenes of focusing lens. While portraiture is technically straightforward, I find it uninspiring to create a simple likeness without incorporating creative alterations. I envisioned a princess draped in a red Arabic-style veil, lavishly adorned with intricate jewelry, as she ventures into a desolate desert. Her flowing dress is depicted billowing in the wind, forming a natural framework that draws attention toward her destination—a once-glorious palace of kings and gods, serving as a mysterious portal to another realm. The palace in the distance, however, is engulfed in flames, highlighting the princess's urgency as she hastens toward the crumbling monument before it succumbs to ruin.</image:title>

The vibrant structures of the children’s playground evoked memories of the bold and striking visual design of Netflix’s Squid Game. Inspired by its candy-colored aesthetic, I enhanced the illustration with brighter hues and added vivid pink to the rubber flooring to heighten the surreal atmosphere. I also incorporated a portrait of Margaret Qualley seated on the slide, symbolizing the unsettling notion of a game designed for adults. The blue sky and white clouds were rendered in a deliberately childlike style. at my son’s request, I included three miniature guardians, subtly blending whimsy and tension, to make the work more interesting and intriguing.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - SAVAGE CHOOCHOO × Sadie Sink - This illustration was created with three purposes: to respond to a friend’s railway photograph, to rest my mind from depicting too many dim and somber atmosphere before, and to practice rendering a variety of textures. The composition combines movement and stillness, featuring a rusty, abandoned locomotive with shattered windows, steel rails, weathered wooden sleepers, scattered gravel, a lash grove, and colorful clouds in the distance. In the foreground, I incorporated a young girl inspired by an image of Sadie Sink walking barefoot on a beach. Here, bathing in a fleeting moment of morning light, she wears a printed sheer dress that flutters in the wind, its transparency subtly revealing the rugged railway surface beneath. This contrast between delicate fabric, rusted metal, and coarse gravel highlights my exploration of texture.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - SURROGATE ARTEMIS × Ella Fanning - Buoyed by my progress, I began using larger paper pads to accommodate broader and more intricate scenes. An ancient Greek temple, adorned with Corinthian-style columns and ornamental patterns, served as the backdrop of the illustration. To align with the theme of Artemis, the goddess of the hunt and the moon, I rendered the scene at night, imbuing it with an air of mystique and quiet reverence. The central figure—referenced from an image of Ella Fanning—was depicted perched mischievously atop the head of a statue of Apollo, mimicking the goddess. However, her simple outfit and hunting equipment betrayed her mortal nature. The interplay of light and shadow across the statue and the figure was carefully rendered, with bold hues of violet and orange used to evoke the golden glow emanating from them, adding a dreamlike quality to the piece.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - WANDAVISION × Elizabeth Olsen - The emotional complexity of the Scarlet Witch, portraited with depth by Elizabeth Olsen in WandaVision and other Marvel series, undergoes a profound transformation, shifting from a powerful hero to a grieving mother and ultimately into a fearsome antagonist. Within her sanctuary, I rendered a place of both reverential grandeur and disquieting chaos, etched with arcane symbols and bathed in an ominous crimson glow. In contrast to this oppressive setting, I depicted the actress with tender, sorrowful eyes, delicate gestures, and diaphanous tulle to symbolize the fragile and authentic gentleness at the core of her being. This arrangement subtly underscores the idea that the sacrifice in her eerie altar is, in fact, herself—her surrender to the consuming allure of sinister energy.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL × Saoirse Ronan - When reflecting on symmetrical composition, one cannot overlook the impressive cinematographic style of The Grand Budapest Hotel. Inspired by this iconic aesthetic, I sought to recreate the elaborate structure and vivid hues of the film’s spectacular reception hall. For the focal point, I positioned Saoirse Ronan at the center, seated gracefully amidst a pile of pink gift boxes. Her dark blazer provided contrast, while the converging lines of the staircases and the carpet naturally drew attention to her serene and unblemished visage. However, the constraints of my paper pad imposed limitations on the illustration, particularly in capturing the expansive grandeur of the setting. Were I to revisit this piece, I would amplify the volume of the ceiling, allowing it to fully convey the opulence and architectural majesty of the building.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - BEAUTY AND THE BEAST × Emma Watson - This piece comes from an activity organized by our small group of artistic enthusiasts wherein an image is selected by vote, and each participant creates an illustration in their own style. A jigsaw puzzle featuring a black cat silhouetted against stained glass was chosen. I reinterpreted it through the lens of Beauty and the Beast, reasoning that the Beast could plausibly embody feline characteristics. Using a photograph of Emma Waston holding a book as reference, I adapted her attire into an azure silk gown and styled her hair in an elegant, minimalist updo to align with the theme. The interaction between her and a lion was rendered to convey intimacy, with vibrant roses added to the background where the black cat originally resided. The most labor-intensive part was replicating the fanciful stained-glass patterns, as I painstakingly ensured that the ornamental details in each panel were hand-drawn with consistency.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - FIFTY SHADES OF GREY × Dakota Johnson - Integrating a character into a perspective-driven scene demands remarkable different techniques. I chose a photograph with an exaggerated perspective angle to depict the figure in a larger scale in the front. Much of my focus went into rendering the grandiose ballroom bathed in golden sunlight, streaming through towering arched windows and reflecting off the polished wood floor, which mirrored the contours of the balcony. While both the background and portrait worked well individually, the actress’s size proved disproportionately large, disrupting the harmony of the scene. One positive aspect was the interplay of light and shadow on the figure, and I simplified her facial structure to avoid too many details. This stylistic adaption lent my work a reminiscent of Tsukasa Hojo’s art style, whose manga enjoyed great popularity during my middle school years.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - OZARK × Julia Garner - The portrait of Julia Garner as a casino dealer seated behind a gambling table captures the commanding presence of her character in OZARK. Her confident expression and assured gestures convey a subtle dominance, as though she holds complete control over the game. To highlight the chips stacked in front of her, I allowed her form-fitting suit to blend into the dark background, reinforcing the somber, oppressive atmosphere of the series though a subdued palette of greens and blues. Her signature short, curly blonde hair was rendered with meticulous attention to detail, adding a touch of intricacy to her otherwise minimalist appearance. One challenge was selecting tones for the shadow areas of her skin within the dim interior; while pale hues would have been more realistic, I opted for a soft orange tint to temper the gloominess of the scene. Guess what her trump card is—it's the 7 and 9 of spades.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - DUNE × Zendaya - Dune masterfully blends stunning visual effects with profound dramatic depth within a meticulously crafted world. Inspired by its vast desert landscapes, I sought to reinterpret its grandeur through a unique perspective, merging the iconic scene of the protagonist facing the colossal sandworm with Zendaya’s ethereal elegance, transcending the constraints of the masterpiece. To achieve this vision, I reimagined her pleated gown in its fully expanded form, transforming it into a projection screen that reflects the film’s most striking spectacle. Capturing the fusion of illumination and shadow as cascades of sand fall from the sandworm’s rise proved to be challenging, especially in maintaining the integrity of the gown’s intricate folds. Balancing the fluid motion of the sand dust with the structural delicacy of the dress required particular attention, yet it allowed me to fuse the film’s raw, monumental scale with a sense of refined beauty.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT × Anya Taylor-Joy - This was my second exploration of the theme from The Queen’s Gambit. The stark contrast of the black-and-white chessboard remains an excellent subject for ink sketching practice. However, this time, I transformed the flat board into a rhythmic 3D structure by varying the heights of the squares, creating a visually compelling composition. I maximized the contrast by positioning white pieces against a black background and vice versa, with the king and queen highlighted in dramatic duel positions. The image of Anya Taylor-Joy adorned in an opulent coat allowed me to experiment with rendering fur textures for the first time. The illustration’s primary flaw was the unnecessarily exaggerated background perspective, which proved challenging to depict with precision.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - WEDNESDAY × Jenna Ortega - Wednesday has been, thus far, the only TV series that my family could enjoy together. Inspired by the show, I created a frame composition using the eccentric and antiquated doorway of Nevermore Academy to enclose a portrait of Jenna Ortega playing the cello in the foreground. Departing from her on-screen attire, I envisioned her in an elegant black gown to suit the formal occasion of an orchestra performance. The hastily rendered dense forest in the background effectively conveyed a sense of enigma and mystique of the storyline. However, the space between the doorframe and the central figure felt overly cramped. I concluded that the frame composition works better for emphasizing smaller, distant elements withing the frame rather than larger, more prominent subjects positioned in the front.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - The Fractured Atlas of Jelara #1 Obsidian Requiem - It occurred to me that I had yet to experiment with a tunnel composition, prompting me to create an illustration depicting the interior of a Gothic-style structure. To add depth, I painted the distant center in bold blue hues that gradually lightened, suggesting an opening at the far end of the tunnel. Standing before a powerful black steed was a princess (I used Anya Taylor-Joy as my model), crowned in Baroque regalia and draped in a scarlet gown, poised to embark her escape. The work was framed from a slightly lower perspective, emphasizing the ascending sequence of the figure, the horse, and the architecture. The princess glances back with an expression of unease, evoking a tense narrative moment. The contrast was enhanced to highlight the interplay between the dramatic structure and the central figure. This marked my first attempt at integrating a character into a realistic environment, a process that needed further study and refinement.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE × Rebecca Ferguson - Can anyone explain why the character portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson in the Mission: Impossible series meets such a tragic fate? Perhaps it’s a matter of budget constraints, but regardless, I created this illustration as a tribute to her remarkable presence, staying true to her original costume from the film. I depicted her hair billowing in the wind as a helicopter loomed closer from behind, using this motion to accentuate the elegant contour of her face. Initially, the greyscale balance of the composition was poorly managed. I then added thick fog rising from the distant mountains to generate atmospheric contrast with the silhouette of the motorcycle in the foreground. I also darkened the helicopter, drawing attention to the diminutive figure clinging to it, highlighting the tensive and dynamic spirit of the action series.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - PAGE OF CUPS - Our art learning group successfully rallied enough members to embark on a big project: creating an entire deck of Tarot cards. I selected the Page of Cups as my theme, envisioning a scene set upon a vast chessboard, sparsely dotted with chess pieces. At the center of the illustration, a young apprentice—having presumably lost the game—turns to a servant holding a brass cup, expressing her earnest inquiry about the game. The cup, glowing with a golden light, symbolizes knowledge and wisdom, firmly in the grasp of the elder figure. To make the girl’s pose complete in a slight sense of perspective, I had to extend the paper pad. While I was pleased with the portrait of the girl, the overall interpretation of the tile remained nebulous. As a result, the composition became overcrowded with disparate elements, diminishing its narrative clarity.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - THE HUNGER GAMES × Jennifer Lawrence - My husband and son flew to reunite with me in Sep. 2022, and I took a year-long break from art. Overwhelmed by guilty, I decided to reignite my artistic journey by challenging myself to depict fire using ink sketching. The Hunger Games immediately came to mind as a fitting subject to fulfill this ambition. Despite my lack of experience in rendering flames, the result was surprisingly satisfactory, prompting my art instructor to humorously remark that I must have been practicing “影稽古”—a Japanese term for training through mental visualization—during my absence. The portrait of Jennifer Lawrence in my work deviated from her appearance in the series. Nevertheless, I felt this modern interpretation still captured the essence of a young, defiant rebellion leader, resonating with the indomitable spirit of her character.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - KILL BILL × Uma Thurman - Having chosen the theme song of Kill Bill as my wedding music, it was impossible for me to overlook this cinematic masterpiece, renown for its electrifying action sequences and rhythmic storytelling, delivering a brutal but mesmerizing experience. I adapted an artwork for the sake of pattern composition and incorporated the cartoonish homage to the film’s iconic Tokyo setting. However, the depiction of Uma Thurman with a samurai sword in hand lacked fluidity, resulting in a stiff and less professional gesture. Despite this, the dual swords held by the Bride—one in the foreground and one in the background—form a triangular vantage point, emphasizing her perilous but commanding presence. I also added the hem of her wedding gown to create a visual separation between the stark black background and the dark tabletop in the front.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - LOTUS POND - Prepare to be captivated by the impeccable organization of this artwork, both in its composition and its striking use of color contrasts. Admittedly, I share your sentiment, as this piece is a faithful reproduction of a digital painting masterpiece. The original work skillfully employs a circular composition, with the curves of the lotus leaves and the graceful motion of swimming carps creating a harmonious flow within the frame. The lighting is strategically placed behind the central figure, accentuating her silhouette from a downward perspective while maintaining a balanced focus on her face. The girl's delicate features are rendered in bright, lively hues, seamlessly harmonizing with the vivid reds and greens of the environment to evoke an atmosphere of energy and vitality. To further enhance the sense of movement and depth, I incorporated additional bubbles and subtle light diffusion, lending the scene a dynamic, almost ethereal quality. From this duplicate, I learnt how to paint hair in a colorful illustration.</image:title>

An interesting aspect in this process was rendering the details of her braids, befitting her portrayal as an Egyptian goddess. By employing a highlight pen to add reflection and then carefully scratching the dried paint, I serendipitously achieved a good effect. However, the feathered wings posed a challenge. I overemphasized the shine, resulting in a loss of their soft, airy essence. A more subdued, blurred treatment would have better conveyed the gentle, fluffy characteristics of real feathers.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - EDGE OF TOMORROW × Emily Blunt - I attempted to create an illustration featuring two figures—something I had never done before. Captivated by the ingenious time-loop narrative and exhilarating action sequences of Edge of Tomorrow, I envisioned combining two contrasting depictions of Emily Blunt—one as an elegant lady and the other as a fully-armored warrior—in one illustration, symbolizing the immerse burden faced by a woman amidst an alien invasion. The exosuit armor with its functional and futuristic design posed a challenge for me to accurately capture. I opted to obscure much of the suit with darker tones, concealing potential mistakes while maintaining the intensity and gravitas of the piece.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - GAME OF THRONE × Emilia Clarke - Placing Emilia Clarke on the Iron Throne is not intended to foreshadow her ultimate fate in the sensational TV series Game of Throne. Rather, it simply employs radiating lines to direct the viewer’s focus toward the point of interest. The metallic sheen of the jagged blades is rendered to contrast effectively with the delicate silk quality of her dress. However, the choice of dragon type and size is ill-conceived. The near-equal scale of the dragon and the portrait results in a lack of volume contrast, diminishing the visual impact and failing to evoke either the looming menace of supernatural forces or the commanding essence of feminine power central to the narrative. To achieve a more compelling composition, the figure should be significantly reduced in scale, allowing greater negative space above to underscore the emptiness inherent in the relentless pursuit of power.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - WESTWORLD × Evan Rachel Wood - I sought to make an illustration employing a circular composition, but regrettably, I misunderstood the concept, rendering the circle too explicit rather than subtly implied, as is more appropriate for the technique. Despite this misstep, the circle in my work serves to replicate the futuristic machinery depicted in the opening sequence of the TV series Westworld, showing the intricate process of crafting hyper-realistic androids. The blurred boundary between humanity and artificial intelligence finds expression in the portrait of Evan Rachel Wood, trying to capture the series’ profound exploration of self-awareness and synthetic identity. Meanwhile, the abstract representation of the rugged, antiquated Old West is interwoven into the background.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - V FOR VENDETTA × Natalie Portman - What lingers most vividly in my memory of V for Vendetta are its dystopian political worldview, the unsettling mask of the vigilante, and the bald appearance of the actress. At the time, my artistic training focused on cultivating patience through detailed depictions of natural elements like trees and flowers. To reflect this, I selected a photograph of Natalie Portman with her striking short hair look and a dress adorned with ornate floral motifs. On top of that, rather than depicting the film’s dark and oppressive atmosphere, a blank background was adopted to avoid detraction from the central figure. Yet, I incorporated roses—another symbol of Britian even though under totalitarian rule—to craft the shape of a “V”, serving to divide the heroine in the foreground from the haunting presence of the iconic Guy Fawkes mask in the back.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - MERMAID IN BATHTUB - This was my first attempt at creating a colorful illustration. Transition from monotone ink sketches to vibrant color work presents a unique challenge, as the cognitive processes involved in interpreting graphic imagery vs richly colored painting differ significantly. The techniques used in monochromatic drawing often become incompatible when directly applied to color, leading to a sense of discord. Aware of this conflict, I deliberately reduced my reliance in linework—particularly in areas like hair, which has previously been a key element in adding detail to black-and-white compositions. I selected a vivid photograph of a woman in bathtub full of flowers. The interplay of highly saturated fill light in the shadow areas of the figure captured my interest and I replaced the lower half of her body with a mermaid tail, imbuing the work with a dreamlike, fairy-tale quality.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - INTERSTELLAR × Jessica Chastain - The groundbreaking visual effects of Interstellar imbue the film with a duality of authenticity and otherworldliness that is difficult to replicate in an ink illustration. Drawing inspiration from the scientifically accurate depictions of the black hole and the spatio-temporal library, I employed their contrasting geometric forms to symbolize the interplay of the personal and the cosmic. A montage of Jessica Chastain’s figure is juxtaposed against the vastness of the space-themed background, her presence rendered in sharp contrast to the diminutive astronaut she gazed upon. This disparity in scale underscores the mediation on humanity’s insignificance within the universe and highlights the profound emotional resonance of individual connections amidst the infinite expanse of space.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - BLADE RUNNER 2049 × Ana de Armas - Next, I tried the triangle composition, a structure traditionally suited for landscape painting. However, this archetype proved less effective for my portrait-centered illustration. Inspired by the sci-fi masterpiece Blade Runner, I envisioned a half-length portrait suspended mid-air, encapsulating the film’s atmosphere of artificiality and otherworldliness. The background features sprawling urban high-rises, shrouded in neon lights and smog. I initially wanted to stick true to the photograph with more details, but the result felt visually overwhelming. Thus, I layered grey ink to soften the contrast. A similar approach was applied to the closer scene of abandoned giant statues in the barren wastelands, gradually darkened until the holographic figure of Ana de Armas emerged as the focal point.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - MAD MAX: FURY ROAD × Charlize Theron - At the introductory stage of learning composition, the rule of thirds is often the most accessible framework to grasp. In my illustration, I positioned the iconic scene from Mad Max: Fury Road in the upper third of the background while placing a silhouette of the breathtaking modified vehicles—emblems of the brutal, scavenged aesthetic of the post-apocalyptic world—within the lower third of the foreground. However, the elements used to depict Charlize Theron, particularly her hairstyle and costume, lacked relevance to the theme. Initially, I contemplated blending characteristics from her other role in Aeon Flux, but this attempt proved to be a misguided fusion. The illustration ultimately failed due to its lack of a definitive focal point. I plan to revisit this theme in light of the recently reloaded prequel.</image:title>

<image:title>Joanna's Art Gallery - INCEPTION × Marion Cotillard - In 2022, I started a project to create a series of illustrations inspired by my favorite movies. At the time, I had just begun learning fundamental concepts of perspective and composition and was eager to apply my learning through hand-on practice. Inception emerged as the ideal subject, with its malleable dreamscapes where gravity, time and physics twist and bend, offering a perfect opportunity to experiment with perspective—even accommodating the occasional misstep of a novice. For the central figure, I used a photograph of Marion Cotillard as a reference. In the background, a Japanese billboard poses the question, “Dream or reality?” while the restaurant bears the name of the ancient Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi, a nod to his classic “Butterfly Dream” parable that explores the nature of perception and reality.</image:title>
